Traffic classification: human, bot, and spam

< 1 min read

Opti-Behavior classifies every session as human, bot, or spam so your analytics reflect real people. This article explains the detection and how to tune it.

How detection works #

  1. Each request is checked against built-in bot signatures covering the common crawlers and automation user agents.
  2. Behavioral and user-agent heuristics flag spam and low-quality automated hits.
  3. Classified traffic feeds the Traffic Classification and Bot Traffic widgets on the dashboard.

Adding custom patterns #

Go to WP Admin ? Opti-Behavior ? Settings ? Traffic & Behavior. Add custom user-agent patterns and spam-filtering rules to catch bots specific to your site.

Bot Traffic detection setting with the custom bot patterns field

Expected result #

Human traffic totals drop to a realistic level and the Bot Traffic widget lists the automated share separately.

FAQ #

Will filtering bots delete data? #

No. Classification labels sessions; it does not delete them. Bot sessions remain available but excluded from human metrics.

How many bot patterns are built in? #

Opti-Behavior ships with more than a dozen bot signatures, extendable with your own patterns.
